Our Services Include
ICL Family Reports
We undertake assessments and reporting requested by Independent Children’s Lawyers (ICLs) to represent the child’s best interests in determining post-separation decisions or arrangements. ICL Family Reports are typically funded by Legal Aid.
Regulation 7 Family Reports
We undertake specialised assessments and reporting requested by the Court under the Family Law Regulations 1984 Regulation 7.
Private Reports
We undertake assessments and reporting when appointed by agreement between parties (sometimes known as Single Expert Witness reports) to present to the Court, to give evidence or prepare a report on issues.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I arrive early on the day of interviews?
The Groundworks Lab does not provide childcare. Supervision of children during adult interviews must be arranged by attendees ahead of time. A support person is welcome to attend for the purpose of supervising children.
How do I ensure my safety when attending?
- A minimum of two team members (including the report writer) will be onsite.
- Attendees will not be permitted entry prior to their scheduled appointment and will be asked to return at the appropriate time.
- A staggered nature of the interview schedule is designed to minimise the potential of attendees crossing paths when arriving and departing.
- Separate waiting areas are available as required.
Who writes a family report?
Our family reports are written by our accredited Family and Social Assessment Specialists. Our specialists are either social workers or psychologists who have extensive experience working with children and families.
How is the family report used in Court?
The report provides the court with impartial recommendations to assist in making decisions about parenting arrangements that prioritize the children’s well-being.
What happens during the interviews?
Interviews involve discussions about your relationship history, current arrangements, parenting dynamics, the children’s needs, and any concerns or proposals you may have.
Can I see the family report before court?
Yes, the report is typically provided to the parties and their lawyers before any court hearing. In some cases, we are able to accomodate an urgent report.
How long does it take to prepare a report?
The time frame varies but typically ranges from two weeks to four weeks, depending on the complexity of the case and the writer's workload.
Do you travel?
Yes, in some circumstances our Family and Social Assessment Specialists can travel to areas outside the Brisbane/Ipswich area.
